Monthly close readiness checklist

A reliable monthly close starts with complete records, timely communication, and a consistent review process.

01

Gather the month’s records

  • Bank and credit-card statements
  • Customer invoices and cash receipts
  • Vendor bills, receipts, and expense documentation
  • Payroll reports and benefit activity
  • Loan, lease, and financing statements
  • New fixed-asset purchases and disposals
02

Resolve open activity

  • Identify uncategorized or duplicate transactions
  • Follow up on missing receipts and documentation
  • Review outstanding customer balances
  • Confirm unpaid vendor bills and recurring obligations
  • Document unusual or one-time transactions
03

Reconcile and review

  • Reconcile bank and credit-card accounts
  • Review significant balance-sheet accounts
  • Compare revenue and expenses with prior periods
  • Investigate unexpected trends and variances
  • Confirm financial reports are complete and reasonable
04

Prepare for management decisions

Review cash flow, profitability, outstanding obligations, and important changes while the information is still timely. Record questions and action items for follow-up.
